Finding Plumbing Issues Early

Three Maintenance Tips For The Plumbing In Your Kitchen

by Chris Bowman

Your kitchen is one area of the home that has many plumbing fixtures that need regular maintenance. Regular maintenance will ensure that the kitchen does not suffer from water damage and that you can continue using the plumbing in this area of your home normally. Here are three plumbing maintenance tips you should be sure to follow on a regular basis:

Check for Leaks:

The sink faucet and the garbage disposal can easily begin to leak in your kitchen suddenly and unexpectedly. This is why you should be checking for leaks on a regular basis. If you notice even a slight leak coming from the faucet, you must be sure to tighten the faucet with a wrench, which should stop the leak. If it does not, then you may need to replace the entire faucet. You should also be checking under the sink to ensure that the garbage disposal isn't leaking. If there is a small build-up of water, then you will want to check to be sure that the water is actually coming from the garbage disposal. You can do this using the food coloring test. This would require you to put a couple drops of food coloring in the sink. If the puddle underneath the sink turns this color, then your garbage disposal has a leak and you will probably need to replace it or hire a plumber to see if they can potentially patch it up.

Maintain the Garbage Disposal:

The garbage disposal in your home is one of the most sensitive plumbing features. This is because a great deal of food and debris goes down the sink, and it can build up and cause the garbage disposal to stop working. First off, you should be sure that you are always aware of what you are throwing down the sink. Never throw down hard items that can dull the blades and always chop things up into little pieces before throwing it down the drain. The other thing you should be doing is cleaning the disposal regularly. You can do this by throwing some ice cubes down the sink and turning the disposal on. This is going to help break up debris that may be stuck in the disposal.

Clean the Sink Drain:

Finally, you should be cleaning the sink drain in your kitchen on a regular basis. A great deal of debris can build up on the sides of the drain that can eventually cause a clog in the sink. To avoid this, you should clean the sink drain with a natural cleaner, such as baking soda and vinegar. Pour a bit of baking soda down the drain and some vinegar to follow and this will help dissolve any build up in the drains.

By knowing some of the things you should be doing on a regular basis to maintain the plumbing in your kitchen, you can avoid a number of issues to come in the future.
